Azur Lane(EN) In-Depth Equipment Guide Series: Surface Ship Torpedoes
Surface Ship Torpedo Overview
Torpedoes are weapons specialized against heavy armor. Similar to guns, torpedoes also have armor modifiers:
Against light armor: 80%
Against medium armor: 100%
Against heavy armor: 120%
Traveling speeds are not shown in game but speeds very noticeably vary.
Salvo spread angle is shown in game but you need to also consider the number of torpedoes per salvo to calculate the actual between-torpedo separation(in other words, how closely do your torps cluster).
These factors will affect each equipment's suitability for manual play vs auto play.
Surface Ship Torpedo Analyses
Quintuple 533mm Torpedo
The stereotypical torpedo. Probably the most easily obtainable gold torp.
Decent damage, high number of torps per salvo. Large spread to cover a big part of the map.
These attributes make this very suitable for auto play.
Probably the most common choice among top-tier torpedoes due to versatility.
T2 purple version is usable but not recommended. T3 torpedoes exist as better alternatives. See below.
Obtainable from: US, UK, JP boxes, 7-2
Quadruple 610mm Torpedo
Torpedo with the highest damage.
Torpedoes are weapons specialized against heavy armor. Similar to guns, torpedoes also have armor modifiers:

Japanese DDs with high torpedo stats using this torpedo to facehug enemies(making sure that all torps in the salvo hit) can deal enormous damage.
Torpedo traveling speed is significantly faster than the other torpedoes.
Although the spread is 50 degrees vs gold 533mm's 60, the torpedoes actually are slightly more spread out from each other(this has 4 torps in 50 degrees vs 533mm's 5 torps in 60 degrees).
The fast traveling speed and spread pattern makes this more suitable for manual than for auto.
T2 purple version exists but not recommended. Stats are much worse. Better T3 purple options exist. See below.

Damage per torpedo is EXACTLY the same as the gold 533 quint. It carries 4 per salvo instead of 5.
Reload is a little bit faster as a result.
As a T3 torpedo, it is in most cases better than the purple version of 533 quint. To see a detailed comparison (and to learn about the equipment tiering system), click here.
Can be used as a transitional or end game weapon depending on your liking, since damage and reload are adequate.

Damage per torpedo is identical, trading off one torpedo per salvo for faster reload. The relationship between this and the gold quad 610mm is analogous to that between the quad 533mm purple and the quint 533mm gold.
It has similarly fast traveling speed as the gold quad 610mm.
Spread range is 40 degrees but it only has 3 torpedoes per salvo. The angles between the torpedoes are even greater than the gold quad 610mm's, The torpedoes quickly become far apart from each other upon lauching.
This is even less suitable for auto compared to the gold quad 610mm. Manual play is still very good though.
Similar to the other pair of torpedoes(533mm), you should use this T3 purple instead of the T2 quad 610mm purple as a transition.

The only fault of this torpedo is actually the blue rarity. The game doesn't allow you to upgrade past +6 for blue weapons. Otherwise, this torpedo has the same stats as others of the family. The 116 damage you see is the +6 stat that is on the purple quad and the gold quint.
Having 3 torpedoes per salvo with a spread range of 40 makes it cluster less compared to other torps of the series, but this is more of a problem of triple torps(same as the 610mm triple's spread angle problem).
Not a bad blue transitional torp. Because you can't upgrade this past +6 you will have to move onto purples and golds later on.

Twin 610mm Torpedo
Analogous situation to the one above. The blue twin version of the Japanese 610mm. Damage per torpedo is the same as the gold quint and purple triple but capped at +6 because this is blue.

Two torpedoes spreading 30 degrees is really a bit much.
Base reload is already almost 20 seconds flat. On actual ships(with ship reload stat being taken into account) you can cut this down even further.
When a ship with torpedo-firing based skills is introduced, this can probably be abused like the blue 76mm is right now. But it probably needs to be a REALLY good skill to make using this worth it.

This rainbow one is supposed to be the "best" one but still keep in mind that it still does less damage than most purples per shot.
However, in practice this may perform better than traditional torps despite of low damage, especially in auto.
If manually playing and dropping at a reasonably close distance, the spread range becomes meaningless because they will simply cluster and hit 100%. This is one of the reasons that magnetic torps give consistent damage.
When it comes to face torping, magnetic torps are "easier" on the player, in that you can afford to leave some distance between you and the enemy, either because you messed up building the momentum and you couldn't close further, or you don't want to get point-blank shot by a strong boss. Either way, after the torps are fired, they can use the homing ability to do the last part of the traveling themselves while you draw back to safety.
Doing the same with the 610 quad will result in some misses, but if you are confident with facetorping 610 still does more damage if all hit.
Please note: Because this is a special case where the T3 is rainbow rarity, this creates an interesting situation where the T2 version of this equipment is gold. The gold version is obtainable from boxes but it's not recommended. Similar to torpedoes of other nations, lower T numbers have lower damage despite of rarities. This rainbow version is not much worse(if not better in practice) than the gold 610 quad, but this is certainly not true for the T2 gold version. From German boxes, you should aim for the T3 gold quad magnetic torp detailed below if you want to be more efficient.
The slow speed isn't necessarily a disadvantage. All factors considered slow torpedo speed might actually be a good thing in general. I think the devs also realized this. This is why some ships have(or will have depending on when you read this guide) skills that deliberately slow down torpedoes.
This is one of the very few rainbow rarity equipments in the game. Rainbow rarity itself has a stat advantage. You probably noticed the TP+70 as opposed to the gold torps' TP+45. This both accounts for some of the success of this equipment and gives us a sneak preview of the torpedo stat buff future rainbow torps (i.e. 610mm Quint) will have.

Quad version of the rainbow quint magnetic. Exact same damage per torpedo at faster reload. Usage is similar. See above.
Generally more preferable to the T2 quint version. This one has more damage per shot and much faster reload, making it rank higher than the T2 quint in theoretical DPS. However because both are homing and all shots hit most of the time, the T2 quint's total burst damage can end up higher than this. If reload isn't an issue(i.e. short battles) feel free to use the T2 quint as a rainbow quint alternative.

Very fast reload at no cost of damage(but at cost of fewer shots per salvo), analogous to the Japanese triple 610mm purple.
The cut in the number of torps per salvo is a little much in this version. Three shots can feel insufficient despite faster reload. This actually lose to the T2 quint gold even in theoretical DPS, not to mention that the T2 gold can burst better with 5 shots. But putting aside this specific comparison, this torpedo is still better/more versatile than all the other T2s and T1s in the same series.
Reload-specialized torpedos might have a role in future ships. Ships often have gun-firing dependent triggers for skills and barrages, which caused some reload-specialized guns to become valuable. They unfortunately don't often have torpedo-firing dependent triggers. The introduction of Ibuki's torpedo skill might be hinting that it may appear in future ships. Or it may simply be because it's a unique skill on a special tech ship. Nobody knows.

Triple 550mm Torpedo
Similar to the Japanese 610mm triple, trading some damage for faster reload.
Not an end-game weapon but is a decent purple.
If you played the game long before research was introduced, you will not likely find this useful. but for newer players this is a nice addition.
Obtainable from: Research
Twin 550mm Torpedo
Another research torpedo aimed at newer players. It is similar ot the Japanese blue 610mm twin. Lower damage but even faster reload. Currently the fastest reload among all surface ship torpedoes.
As stated before, if torpedo-firing trigger ever becomes a thing, this may be proven useful. Otherwise treat it as transitional.
